Eye to Eye

The Herald on Sunday has a brief promo, presumably placed by New Zealand First, of today’s episode of Eye to Eye which screens at 11.30 am on TV1 today.  The story builds on much speculation on the blogs yesterday.  Most of the stuff is roughly accurate, with the usual exaggerations and so forth that stories like this always have.

What happened is this.  Willie Jackson was very keen all of Friday for me to appear on the programme, including saying I would be a coward if I wouldn’t say to Winston’s face what I have said and written elsewhere.  I eventually agreed because Willie is a mate.

When Winston arrived, he then attacked me in the Green Room and I gave it back to him in good strong language (to his surprise).  The detail of what happens in the Green Room must stay in the Green Room.

We then started recording on the set.  Winston claimed to have been completely exonerated by the Serious Fraud Office.  I said that wasn’t true - that the SFO had found that laws were probably broken and had referred his file to the Police, the Electoral Commission and the Auditor-General.  He said I was lying.  I said he was lying and repeated the allegation (which of course is not really an allegation - just a statement of fact).

He kept calling me a liar.  I kept calling him a liar.  Willie stood up and said “cut” (or words to that effect).  In the discussion about how to proceed after we were no longer recording, I told Winston he was a “fucking cunt” - in retrospect, I accept that I left out the important adjectives “lying” and “corrupt” between the other two appropriate but more Anglo-Saxon words.

I also told Willie that he had been asking me all day to appear, and I was doing reluctantly, and I wasn’t going to sit there if WInston was just going to lie with obvious falsohoods, such as denying he is being investigated by the Police, the Elecotral Commission and the Auditor-General, which he is and which had been confirmed by the SFO just a few hours before.

We then recorded the show a second time and he abused me for a great deal of it.  I gave some back as you will see if you watch at 11.30 am.  I don’t recall, in the second take, Winston trying to get away with denying he is under Police, Auditor-General and Electoral Commission investigation.   I also asked him, as a former Treasurer and Foreign Minister, to share with us his unique insights on the global economic meltdown.  Surprisingly, his answer lacked depth.

A few minor points of detail: It is not true that I swore when we were recording the programme.  Nor is it true that I was “yelling at the top of my voice” anymore than Peters was, nor that I “stood up”, as the New Zealand First research director, who wasn’t on set, incorrectly told the HoS, presumably on Peters’ say so.  Old Willie is also being a bit of a stirrer saying he found what I said “quite shocking”.  We had a few wines after and he thought it was great TV.  It is true that Willie originally wanted Winston to appear with Rodney Hide but Winston refused.

Hopefully all the speculation drives the ratings up a bit.  TVNZ has failed to properly promote the programme which is perhaps the only genuine kiwiana current affairs programme we have, with most others lacking any local character.

Finally, I am very proud that I have looked Peters in the eye and called him a liar, a crook and a fucking cunt.  He has been a most evil influence on New Zealand politics since he first began telling lies, scaremongering and attacking minorities in the 1980s.  And I also feel a little guilty that I have been able to look him in the eye and tell him the truth when so many other New Zealanders don’t get the same opportunity.

Mate, you’re just fucking awesome for dishing out some colourful language but still a bit of a pussy for not kneeing him in the balls and landing a solid blow on his snooter, while you were looking at him eye 2 eye!

    maybe next time?

  2. Put it away Says:

Well someone had to say it.

  3. rouppe Says:

Well the herald piece certainly isn’t flattering to you, Matthew.

I’d have thought you would know that this is standard practice from bully’s like Winston and Trotter. They needle you off the ball so that when you retaliate in front of the ref you’re the one that gets in trouble.

Indidentally the Herald says Winston thought he was appearing with Trotter, not Hide. And personally speaking, with mates like WIllie, I’d be very careful next time. He put you right in it and didn’t have your back.

  4. Matthew Hooton Says:

rouppe - fish ‘n’ chips paper. And Willie is just trying to drive up his ratings as any businessman would.

  5. rouppe Says:

    Like I said, personally speaking…

Anyone who wants to call Winston what they want just has to cruise Courtney Place late at night. Now that he’s on garden leave he’s got plenty of time for that.

    Matthew

I posted a comment on one of Chris Trotter’s threads here: burt on meeting Winston

One day I might document the conversation and other things that occurred in the ‘Big Easy’ bar. His minders could see I was baiting him and they did a great job of stopping Winston from doing exactly what I was wanting him to do - if only he had taken a swing at me!

You have got to hand it to Winston, when he looses his composure he is a complete loose cannon.

I can’t really give you points for baiting him because he is very easily baited but I do give you points for standing up to him - he’s an overbearing obnoxious man when he starts shouting lies and nonsense.

  8. Pique Oil Says:

Bullies do not like being confronted. What you did, is what many of us would have done, if the little chappie came out to see us.
I am proud of you, and wish that more would stand up and say what they feel and think.
The repercussions are seldom as bad as the knowledge that you didn’t have the guts to stand up.

  9. Peter Says:

Good on you Matthew for proving that you are one of the very few NZ males (sic) who still has balls and a functioning brain. The rest of us (a few excluded) are in Arnold’s words “girly men” - if that. If we had more like you we wouldn’t have had 9 years of creeping socialism. Good to see Kerre Woodham today came out against nanny state. Is it too much to hope for more people to wake up before its too late?

Ps - John, do you have balls? - if so, show them and use them - you are being pushed around by Clark and the leftist MSM. Ask Garner if he has ever said anything under the weather that would look bad on the front page of the paper. Ask Mold the same. Ask them both who they voted for last time and why are they biased. It worked for Helen a few months ago when she berated the Herald and some nice man Peter Davis, of no disclosed relation to Clark, also wrote to the Herald at the same time. Grow some balls or a lot of the men left here won’t be here after Nov 8.

Bullies do not like being confronted.

They sure don’t - they find it curiously unimpressive :-)

  11. David in Chch Says:

We just watched the first part of Eye to Eye and we could not finish it. That lying corrupt #^$#&^*&# could not lie straight in bed!

  12. Paul Williams Says:

The best advice I had as a youngter was to never argue with a fool; to anyone watching, it’s hard to distinguish which protagonist is which.

  13. Petero Civoniceva Says:

    God, pure gold!

That’s the most savage televisual eviseration of a “junior” I’ve ever seen. Keep niggling Matthew - each feeble attack lifts Winston half a per cent.

Someone tell Soper to do up his shirt.

Incidentially, which satirist came up with this?: “Matthew Hooton has played a pivotal role in some of New Zealand’s largest commercial and politcal developments”.

  14. higherstandard Says:

You shouldn’t let Winston wind you up Matthew he’s hardly worth the bother.

I watched his party political broadcast last night and came close to wetting myself it was so funny - although if you broadcast it in black and white and in German it would have been a good pitch for the National Socialists of the thirties in Germany.

  15. higherstandard Says:

Petero I though you were in jail for assaulting a young lady in a bar in Brisbane after the footy ?

Biffo is OK but I don’t want this descending into a brawl. There was enough of that on the TV.

  16. John Dalley Says:

David, Stop abusing Mathew like that i’m sure he lies in bed just fine. He may not sleep too well after the battering he got this morning but i’m sure he will get over it once he has also got over National crashing and burning in flames.

  17. burt Says:

    John Dalley

It must about time to get your lithium levels checked again. Gotta watch that dosage carefully mate.

  18. Atom Ant Says:

All’s fair in love and war. Interesting to see Winnie still attracts the odd lover (John, Petero) - and plenty of war (everyone else).

  19. SeaJay Says:

So if Willie is Hootons ‘mate’, but just being a businessman with the ratings, what is Hootons agenda for appearing on i2i?. Helping a mate? Working on his own ratings?
To boast that he called a parliamentarian a fucking cunt is not impressive, it is boorish and just not correct. To call a person a liar, obsfucator, whatever, is acccurate when the cap fits, but what do the women in Hootons life do with a man who is proud to regale the media with his gutterfinger and guttermouth. Calm down and fly right Hooton (and On and On….) Respect your opponents and we will respect you.

  20. robin trippick Says:

Winston Peters is a scurrilous lying cheating little man who would sell his own mother if it meant he would get some tv ratings.

I think for Willy to suggest that he is the most exciting MP of this generation totally demeans Politics and the majority of politicians who are actually doing there best to make NZ a better place.

The sooner Winston is no longer part of the political landscape the better and as for the slagging Mathew Hooton took in the Herald it makes one wonder as to the integrity of the paper as the article was almost entirely inaccurate.

    ——————————————————————————–

  21. MacDad Says:

You’re quite right, Matthew, Peters is a fucking lying corrupt cunt.

Nice job on eye to eye.

  22. Bridgid Says:

I am no fan of Winston Peters, and don’t normally watch Eye to Eye, but what really struck me when watching the show today was how silly and immature several of the panellists made themselves look.
Matthew seems to have a massive obsession with Winston Peters - really odd! Has he got nothing better to do with his time? I think we all know that Winston will probably be gone after the elections, so why is Matthew obsessing about him???
And what I HATE when watching political shows is how they almost always descend into personal abuse with everyone shouting at the same time, so the viewer can’t make out what anyone is saying.
Matthew, there are better ways to get your views across than calling people “f–king c–ts” - what did you achieve by that? A little momentary thrill?
Sorry but I think you need to grow up (a lot)…

  23. burt Says:

    Bridgid

And what I HATE when watching political shows is how they almost always descend into personal abuse with everyone shouting at the same time…

I think the format used in “The rich list” where the individual parties are in sound proof pods would work. The host could simply shut the noisy bastards down so that they couldn’t interrupt all the time.

  24. Dire Straits Says:

If I’d been you in that studio Matthew, there would have been some serious BIFFO after about 3 minutes!

  25. GPT Says:

Very good Matthew. My mother might not approve of the language but even she would agree the sentiment is right! I did enjoy your interjection when Winston was getting on his high horse about how you called him a cheat, liar etc and you said “because you are”. Brilliant.

Scary thing is that the prick is so shameless in his lies he just might convince 5% to vote for him.

  26. GPT Says:

Oh, and by the way, I wish someone could have given Doug Woolerton a lollipop and a pat on the head before sending him off whilst the adults talked (exchanged insults). At least Peters can make stuff up that sounds vaguely plausible. Woolerton’s just plain thick.

  27. Peter Malcouronne Says:

    Fergie,

Was your lost word - your censored slur - “arch-nerd” perchance? (and before you get too moderate, Bryan, can I remind you that the world’s second richest man rejoices in this appellation).

Frankly (with apologies to Don B.), nerdishness is what reeks in this post. Followed by hordes of pseudonymous tough guys trying to channel John Wayne… ha ha, too much! Come on, children. At least the man who played a “pivotal role in some of New Zealand’s largest commercial and politcal developments” fires his fevered barbs under his name. Man up the rest of you.

Oh, and let’s introduce some reality to the debate here. If it was a mano-a-mano green room free-for-all, Winston would smack out Hooters, Key, Ryall and any other nasal-toned geek m’leeks who wanted a go. Bill English would hold his own, though. Rodney would show some ticker. The rest - muppets.

  28. tracey Says:

Matthew is probably right about Winston’s credibility, it’;s just funny coming from the man behind the men, of Hollow Men. Winston v Matthew arguing over the moral high ground, look up and find they are both still in the gutter.

  29. Paul Williams Says:

Peter’s right of course, Winston would clean the floor in a bare-knuckled, street fight - Bill ‘the entertainer’ English accepted. To be fair to Matthew, he ought to have the opportunity to truly test himself away from those pesky producers who’ve denied him his shot.

I say Winston and Hooten volunteer for this year’s Fight for Life? Neither would be short of sparring partnership!

  30. Atom Ant Says:

phil ure, talk about lousy language. Are you able to string a sentence together or do you prefer to hide what ever it is you’re trying to communicate behind dreadful punctuation and formatting?

Pamphlet tossed in my back door while I was mowing the lawns this afternoon by a Labour foot soldier (best do an inventory of precious/valuable belongings) reads in bold.

” THE WORLDS FINANCIAL MARKETS ARE IN CRISIS. NATIONAL’S PLAN OF RECKLESS BORROWING FOR TAX CUTS IS JUST CRAZY”

Fancy having the audacity to deliver such a blatant lie to NZ voters. Clearly this was printed before National released a tax policy that resulted in a lower deficit than Labour’s. To actually deliver it shows how dopey this outfit has become.

  31. Atom Ant Says:

Boyd, I’ve noted constant reference to Ron Mark. Is Ron a violent man?

PS Winston was found to be a liar by his colleagues, why are you cutting him so much slack?

PPS if you had a dollar for every time Winston had abused/badgered a kiwi you’d be a very rich man.

  32. Bridgid Says:

Why have some of the posts on this thread been removed? Did the posters remove them themselves or did the moderator?
I think Fergies’s and someone elses (phil ure?) have gone so now the thread doesn’t make sense - it doesn’t follow on.
    Just wondering….

  33. Boyd Says:

    hi Atom Ant,

Winston is no more a liar than most other politicians and when put alongside the many other far more important issues on our plate his muck up just doesnt seem that big of a deal. I guess I like the bloke because everyone else doesn’t and he stands for a few things which are important to me: NZ ownership of strategic assets/backcountry/coast, etc.

I reckon our mainstream media in general is losing a bit of objectivity by getting a bit too personality driven and is noticeably tilting to the the right - must be the fat salaries the TV hacks get that is turning them all into tories.

I’m pretty sure Ron Mark saw some action at the sharp end when he was in the army and he quite deservedly “sorted out” a guy I know down here.

Can someone tell me why the media barely touched the issue of john keys tranzrail shares?

    cheers

  36. Lee-Anne Says:

I can’t believe that Hooten thinks that it is okay and that he is proud that he called Peters a F***** C***. I am a primary school teacher and his behaviour is unbelievable. What kind of role model does he think he is? I certainly hope he doesn’t have children! What kind of standards does Hooten have? Not very high standards obviously. Let’s hope we can publicly hear people share their views and opinions without the abuse that Hooten displayed today.

  40. Lee-Anne Says:

From what I have seen it is okay for Hooten to use swear words and be rude about someone else but as soon as someone else does it to him their post gets removed. It doesn’t seem fair…its all very one sided. Not a true blog session really.

Lee Ann - this is not a democracy. Comments are deleted if they are offensive trolling. philu has demonstrated repeatedly on this and other blogs that he is a troll.

  41. Ianmac Says:

Phil ure, Lee-anne, I agree. My critisism of Hooten was very mild. (Childish, badly behaved.) I did not swear, as Mattew proudly did and repeated. I didn’t accuse him of lying. Interesting that in view of the alleged loss of Free Speech EFA, it is weird that some of us have been Censored out. Shame Bryan!

Ianmac - perhaps you should have a flick through the comments on Matthews threads and Chris’s threads. I think you will find we are a lot more tolerant than certain other blogs e.g. “The Standard”.

We don’t however accept the level of vileness offered by “D4J”, “redbaiter”, “Dylan Robinson aka robinsod”, “philu”, “IrishBill” on other blogs.

    Bryan Spondre
    Blog Producer

  42. Bridgid Says:

Yes, I’ve got to say that I agree with Lee Anne. At the very top of this thread a poster (Dire Straits) says that Matthew Hooton is “f—ing awesome” for dishing it out to Winston Peters, yet other posts critical of Matthew Hooton (that used less colourful language also) have been removed. Lets have some consistency here please.
My two sons are aged 13 and 10, and are just starting to get interested in politics and the upcoming elections - but I am glad they didn’t watch Eye to Eye today and the childish antics displayed on there. I want them to watch some of the shows covering Election ‘08 but not ones like that!
And Matthew boasting that he called WP a “f-ing c-nt” just makes me sick - I too hope that he doesn’t have children and speak in that manner around them - very BAD role modelling!!!

  43. Fergie Says:

But Bryan I am NOT a troll - I am a genuine interested participant like Lee Anne and Bridgid - I raised genuine concerns about the language allowed on this blog when posted about another person - yet my posts were regarded as vile ????
I do have genuine concerns about the type of journalism that Matthew subscribes to and my comments are mild compared that those has expressed on this blog., and Matthew’s own conduct and language. His obsession with Winston knows no bounds of decency.
If you only want people that agree and want to use the sort of language you subscribe to then you should close the blog to people who agree with you - might save you a lot of time censoring.

  44. Bryan Spondre Says:

Fergie - this post has had around 1100 views (900 uniques) sinced it was posted 12 hours ago. Of those 900 people only 3 have been banned for making unacceptable comments. One of those banned (philu) is a habitual troll banned from several of the other top NZ political blogs.

Hardly qualifies as censorship does it?

    Bryan Spondre
    Blog Producer

  45. Fergie Says:

    Bryan
You have removed three of my posts - was expecting this to be gone by supper too.
It appears only posts that suggest Matthew have a long hard think about himself have been censored - I rarely post to any blog - I certainly do not swear, but I challenge you to tell me what was more offensive about my posts than the others on this blog
You might have had 900 views, but of the 44 posts here 3 of mine have been censored and regarded as vile - that Bryan is 7 % censorship ( not to mention those of Philu’s) and any others you removed. We do live in democracy Bryan and if you don’t want to hear other’s views then you should run it for ‘members only’.

  46. Peter Says:

A good question to have asked Winny was why did he upon the death of his mother tell the public that he had just forund out about the Owen Glen donation from Henry? As we know this was a complete lie. So, in summary hoping to get the sympathy vote, he used his mothers death to ‘lessen’ the lie.

That’s the lowest of the low IMHO. Using the still warm corpse of your dead mother for political gain.

Wonder what his family thought of that?

  47. Paul Williams Says:

Perhaps your actions are censorious Bryan. The post topic is about Matthew abusing someone but anyone that abuses him is banned? How’s that consistent - blogs aren’t democratic, most understand this but generally there’s a tolerance of diverse commentary, particularly if the topic is such as this.

It’s your house mate, do as you will, but don’t be surprised if people point out the inconsistency.

Got it in one Paul: it’s our house.

You should all be pleased that we live in a ‘free’ (not sure for how much longer) country, where politicians don’t have to worry about car bombs each day…a couple of swear words (due to 20 years of frustration putting up with a FLC), is hardly anything to get your knickers in a twist over.

  49. George Says:

This is simply not good enough. I’m waiting for someone in the political circuit you guys move in to wind WP up to the extent that words fail him and he clenches his tiny manicured fists and has a go! That is good TV. You see, for years we have been talked down to by these trash, they affect the lives of millions, drag NZ in the dirt and figure themselves above any law let alone a backhander in the chops.

Why not make a series? Next episode Mallard, the one after that Cullen and we can set the ruling gorgons into a grand finale mud wrestling fight club. Set it up. You’ll play to full houses.

  50. jim bolger Says:

This is pretty base for somebody who runs a PR firm. Basic abuse is pretty much the last stop for somebody who has run out of options for intelligent debate. Peters may be a pain in the ass and a whole lot of things but I was surprised that you don’t have the mental wherewithal to tackle Peters with your mind.

So my suggestion is go get a job picking pumpkins or something similarly uncomplicated and simple, where you’ll be in excellent linguistic company.

Never been here before but it seems this blog is something of Phrase deleted for being pointless, innaccurate and offensive. I have forwarded it to Orcon so they can investigate the veracity of it’s claimed authorship. Bryan Spondre Blog Producer This approach wouldn’t have got you very far when I was the boss!

  51. Richard Hurst Says:

Thank you Mr Hooten for saying to Peters what so many people would love to say to him face to face if we only had the chance.
    Again, thank you.

  52. Stephen Doyle Says:

If Mr Hooten’s remarks are the level of debate that our “right wing” journalists serve us, we are very poorly served indeed.

  53. GPT Says:

I see there is some debate on “censorship”. Somewhat ironic as when I posted a question along the lines of “why is it a media beat up when you campaigned against big donations for 15 years and it turns out that you’ve been getting them” on Winston’s blog it never made an appearance.

  54. Bryan Spondre Says:

GPT - I have only had one comment make it through moderation at winstonpeters.com. Having said that at least the provenance of winstonpeters.com is clear.

  55. burt Says:

I posted a comment on Winton’s blog inviting him to join me for lunch (Scampi). I promised that if he did have lunch with me I would make a large cash donation to his party and not tell anyone so he wouldn’t need to declare it. The comment never got past moderation….. Funny that.

  56. Bryan Spondre Says:

Burt - make me the same offer & I promise not only to post it but accept it.

  57. Paul Williams Says:

Got it in one Paul: it’s our house.

I’ve found that if you treat your audience with respect, they stick around; if you require of them something you’re unwilling to do yourself, they quickly find other distractions.

Matthew’s spirited defence of his behaviour justified, in fact invited, strong counter commentary. If he’s man enough to take on Winnie in person, why’s he concerned about anonymous online criticism?

I think Matthew was used by Willie, used because his actions are largely predictable. Willie invited Matthew to ensure he got news, to ensure Winston rose to the occassion. Matthew was the show’s fluffer. Not a role many aspire too.

  58. Peter Malcouronne Says:

“Matthew was the show’s fluffer - not a role many aspire to”

But how I wish you hadn’t contaminated the lovely “cunt” with slime-”balls”.

  65. tracey Says:

Matthew, if it is correct as you say, you kept much more quiet about it than you have your Labour/WP outrage, or did YOU leak the Hager papers???

  66. Matthew Hooton Says:

Tracey - read the Hollow Men more closely.

  67. Dire Straits Says:

Just a comment on your excellent moderation of this blog Bryan…it has really opened my eyes and given all of us a taste to what we can expect, as Judith starts introducing Labour’s Copyright Protection Act and other controlling Internet policies.
