Progressively increase our refugee quota from 750 per year to 1000 per year Ensure that all refugees and asylum seekers are treated humanely, with detention only used in exceptional cases, where a genuine security risk can be identified Abide by the provisions of the 1951 Refugee Convention and related international agreements Improve funding to the RMS Refugee Resettlement to enable it to fulfil its mandate Provide specialised services for refugees, such as the Refugees as Survivors Clinics
Improve the uptake of English language education for migrants and refugees Ensure the Labour Inspectorate monitors employers' use of migrant labour to ensure there is not exploitation of immigrant or refugee workers
Cut refugee quotas to 750
Review 'family reunification' policies across both the immigrant and refugee categories which have rapidly become an open door for large numbers of unqualified migrants The family reunification category [of the refugee policy] will be limited to spouses and immediate dependent children only and will be incorporated into the 750 annual quota Amend the Immigration Act to ensure that those with a serious criminal conviction from an overseas jurisdiction cannot be considered for refugee status Replace the Refugee Status Appeals Authority with a body directly accountable to parliament Modify the refugee programme to ensure all refugee claims are considered on a case-by-case basis and that refugee numbers are not solely dictated by overseas jurisdictions
Form a trained, ready-response refugee team that can fly at short notice to the location of a refugee crisis and apply pre-set criteria to fill New Zealand's quota Establish a specific employment placement service for refugees
